Multiple complaints about inconsiderate boaters have prompted the OPP to remind boaters to think before they sink.
Speaking in Muskoka recently, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says one of the biggest issues OPP hears about is speed close to shore causing huge waves.
Boaters are urged to remain aware of wakes from bigger boats and if you are renting or own a boat, be cautious of everyone around you.
“Anytime you are close to shore you’re required to stay under 10 km per hour when you are 30 metres or about 100 feet from shore,” says Schmidt. “Now keep in mind – when you are 100 feet from shore there’s a very real possibility that there could be shoals rocks and areas where you could really damage your boat and injure yourself if someone falls off. Please be considerate, think about where you are.”
Schmidt adds that it always helps too if you have knowledge of the water via charts or electronic maps because if you get stranded on the water it can be a long time before help arrives.
