Waste Connections of Canada (WCI) has written the District of Muskoka Council about constraints it says will make their Material Recovery Facility on Ecclestone Drive in Bracebridge no longer able to receive recyclables collected in the district.
In an open letter to the Council, the company says it’s the result of the Request For Proposal (RFP) recently released by the municipality which the company says placed such substantial restrictions on process capabilities, limited contract length and changes in how the material is collected today, that it has deemed Waste Connections of Canada unqualified to submit a proposal.
The company says as the WCI facility is the only material recovery facility in the Muskoka Region, presumably, the recyclables will now be transported via trucks down the highway to the GTA, which is the nearest location that the terms of the RFP can be fulfilled.
“This of course comes at a cost to the environment from an emissions and spill perspective and will require more Muskoka taxpayers dollars to fund the construction and operation of a transfer facility to ship these volumes out of the district,” reads the letter. “All of this will come at great cost to the average Muskoka taxpayer versus utilizing a local and very capable supplier.”
The company says they will proudly continue to provide the superior service expected by their customers for all commercial/industrial waste and recycling needs, as well as residential curbside waste collection for the District.
“We sincerely hope the new vendor you select for processing recyclables will meet your expectations and deliver the same dedicated service that our local staff have provided to you – our friends and neighbours,” adds the letter, which was posted on the company’s local FB page (above).
