Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Muskoka and the Barrie area.

Bitterly cold wind chills near -30 are expected overnight and into Friday morning in the Barrie area and -35 in the Muskoka area.

Temperatures should rise Friday morning.

With the forecasted cold temperatures over the next couple of days, the Town of Gravenhurst is reminding residents that if you are suffering from the cold, the Centennial Centre is open to the public during normal hours of operation as a place to warm up.

“We want our residents to know that they have a warm, safe place to go to escape from the cold with the forecasted temperatures," said Todd Clapp, Gravenhurst Community Emergency Management Coordinator. “With temperatures in the minus twenties, excluding the wind chill forecasted, it’s important to regularly monitor those people that are at the greatest risk, including children and seniors. If you must venture outside remember to dress in layers and to cover exposed skin as well as take regular breaks in a warm place.”

The Gravenhurst Centennial Centre is open on

Thursday from 5:30 am to 11 pm

Friday from 5:30 am to 10 pm

Saturday from 7 am to 8 pm.
